Sandwickworkz, ahmedabad

SandwichworkZ is a standalone café that has become known for its breakfasts and fusion food. They have recently expanded their menu.

DÉCOR

SandwichworkZ has simple, clean, low-on-frills interiors, which is very much in keeping with the simple, substantial and tasty food they serve.

There is a board with the day’s specials, a TV screen, a bookcase full of books (check out the bound Mandrake – Phantom comics that may remind many of their childhood, and the owner also seems to like all kinds of poetry), a soft board with seasonal specials and photographs on the wall.

FOOD

With long opening hours, SandwichworkZ has deservedly become a popular place for breakfast especially as there are not many standalone places for a western breakfast in Ahmedabad. They make excellent waffles which are brown and quite crisp but soft and fluffy when you bite into it. You can have it the traditional way with maple syrup and butter or ask for their Savoury Waffles Breakfast which comes with eggs, hash brown, cheese and either salami or sautéed mushrooms, and juice, tea or coffee. If you prefer their pancakes, their Big Daddy’s Breakfast includes three pancakes, three eggs scrambled, mashed potatoes and either four grilled sausages or a bowl of baked beans, also with tea, coffee or juice. They also have Hungry Man’s Breakfast which has toast-butter instead of pancakes. These breakfasts are available all day. For those who like Indian breakfasts, the Paratha stuffed with potatoes, paneer, onion or cheese chilly (they even have Barfi Paratha if you have a sweet tooth!) is also good. Egg lovers could try their version of the Shakshouka, a dish believed to be Tunisan in origin and very popular in Israel, containing eggs poached in a sauce of tomatos, onions and spices. They also do pretty good Spanish style three-egg omelets folded around a choice of fillings like paneer, chicken, ham, mushroom, etc.

As the name suggests, the menu is loaded with sandwiches – plain, Mumbai-style with chutney or SandwichworkZ Classics. Meat lovers can order their Shammi Kebab Sandwich while those who like eggs are likely to enjoy their Spicy Omelet Sandwiches which are also quite robust. Their hot dogs, kathi rolls and club sandwiches are okayish.

Though it tags itself as a Fusion Street Café, SandwichworkZ also surprises with some good North Indian Indian fare like Saag Chicken, Butter Chicken/Paneer, Paneer Burji and Country Chicken, served as combos with rotis, parathas or other breads, and also Bagara Bath with mushrooms or paneer. You can even ask for a simple home food combo. Recently, they have launched a good Cholley Bature. The Mumbai Irani classic, Keema Bun and Fried Egg is on the menu, and is subtly spiced. They some good biryanis, through if you don’t like them too spicy ask them to tone down chillies. The mutton on their weekend special Mutton Biryani is so good the meat falls of the bone.

For dessert try their Chocolate Sandwich, Elvis Presley Sandwich (Nutella, Peanut Butter and Banana) or their Waffle Lolly on a stick with chocolate sauce. They do some good coffee drinks and even a Chocolate Shake with coffee in it.
